Fifty Shades Of Grey Movie Sets A Release Date

Fifty Shades Of Grey Movie Sets A Release Date image
Despite the book's X-rated content, we've been hearing about a potential Fifty Shades of Greymovie since March of last year, but only recently has the movie actually started taking major steps towards becoming a reality. Screenwriter Kelly Marcel was hired to pen the adaptation inOctober 2012, but it took until last week for the project to find a director, finally hiring Nowhere Boy helmer Sam Taylor-Johnson - wife of Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson- just last week. And now that that crucial piece is in place, Focus Features apparently feels confident to the point that they are ready to set a firm deadline for the film. And it's a bold one.

The studio has posted an update on their official Facebook page officially announcing that Fifty Shades of Grey is being prepped for release in theaters on August 1, 2014. The announcement was made with the following image of Christan Grey's helicopter from the story, as well as a link to the movie's own Facebook page (which you can find here).

What makes the date such a bold choice is its competition. Comic book movie geeks are well aware of the August 1, 2014 date, as that also happens to be the day that Marvel Studios plan on releasing James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, the star-studded space-set sci-fi epic featuring the likes of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro and many more. The film is admittedly the big wild card in Marvel's Phase Two plans leading up to The Avengers 2, but it's still a fairly significant gamble for Focus Features given the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then again, I can't imagine that there is too much crossover in the targeted demographics for both movies, so perhaps they are just expected to stay out of each other's way.

My honest question, however, is this: does anyone actually still care? Months ago it was practically impossible to enter on to any kind of social media website without hearing people talk about 50 Shades of Grey, be it fans praising it or others mocking it. But now, like with every fad, all of the talk and hype seems to have all but completely faded away. It's entirely possible that once the production gets going and the release date gets closer the fanhood will be reignited within people and there will be a second wave of popularity, but for now it's not hard to wonder if perhaps this film adaptation took too long to come together and has managed to miss the boat.

Now that the film has a director and an official release date, expect things to start moving a lot faster with Fifty Shades of Grey. Be sure to check in regularly for all of the latest updates.
